Asheville, NC Mayday
This week starts our Safety & Survival month. The entire month of November will be dedicated to firefighter survival and rapid intervention. Don't stop with the sceduled training; there are many great training resources on the web. Study LODD and near-miss reports and learn from them. Let no firefighter's death be in vain.
Quote of the Week
"Your training should periodically show you your physical and mental limits, because reality will, at some point, try to lure you past them". — Firefighter Dan Snyder, AFPD

What Would You Do?
How would you stabilize? What is your plan A? Plan B? NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Rescue workers attempt to free a woman victim trapped in a car after a tree fell on it in Newport Beach, Calif. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011. Costa Mesa police Lt. Mark Manley says the car was stopped on Irvine Boulevard shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday when the tree, estimated between 40 and 50 feet tall, toppled over from the center median and onto the vehicle. Manley says the female driver of the blue Hyundai sedan was pinned inside the car. He says she initially was alive and responsive but died while paramedics were trying to free her. Manley says the woman was the only person in the car. She hasn't yet been identified. Manley says authorities do not yet know what caused the tree to fall. FF INJURED DURING HOSE TESTING IN TN
Sunday, October 9, 2011 A freak accident resulted in a Bradley County Firefighter being flown to the Erlanger Medical Center Trauma Unit this morning. It happened during a routine equipment maintenance exercise on the department’s fire hoses.
BCFR Chief Dewey Woody explained that just before 10 am firefighters laid the hoses out in the Maytag parking lot on 3rd street in Cleveland. When the hoses were put under pressure one of the metal couplings used to connect the hoses together, failed and disintegrated. Part of the coupling struck the firefighter in the forehead.
“The firefighter was wearing his safety helmet and safety goggles which no doubt prevented an even more serious injury” Chief Woody said. Woody went on to explain that this is why the department conducts annual equipment maintenance checks. We must be sure it will not fail when an emergency arises. “Unfortunately, this failure resulted in a firefighter being injured.”
Bradley County EMS personnel, who were already on the scene, administered first aid. Erlanger’s Life Fore Helicopter was then called due to the type of injury.
Chief Woody said the name of the fireman is not being released at this time pending notification of all family members. The fireman is listed in stable condition in the Erlanger Trauma unit.

Welcome
Welcome to the Lady's Island/St. Helena Fire District Training Division blog. My intent with this blog is to create an easily accessible place to share information, news, and training information with all the members of our organization. It will take me a while to get things figured out, but please check back frequently as I will try to update often. Again, great thanks to John for all of his hard work on the website.
