Tree falls on Wisconsin Firefighter

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 A Fall Creek firefighter was injured Tuesday evening when a tree fell on him as he battled a field fire along South Rodell Road in the town of Lincoln, west of Augusta.

The unidentified firefighter was taken by Eau Claire ambulance from the scene after a tree 4 to 6 inches in diameter fell on him at about 5:30 p.m. His injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, said Fall Creek fire Chief Bob Dewitz.

Fire crews responded to the fire at 4 p.m., which appeared to be a flare-up from a previous fire, Dewitz said.

Stay the Course

From http://www.fireservicewarrior.com/
By: Gary Lane

So there I was.  Out behind the firehouse again.  T-shirt soaked from sweat and wrinkled from being under my gear.  In front of me sat our Engines’ two ground ladders (or “portables” if you speak FDNY) that I had been “playing” with for the last hour.  The only thing missing was the smell of smoke and stretched hoselines… and some more firemen.  Here’s the thing:  I was by myself.  This one fact really got me down and I had a tough time moving past it.  I only bring this up because I think we need to talk about this a little bit.  What do you do when you are the only one?  You stay the course, that’s what.

Thinking Outside The Box May Kill You

Great article from http://www.safefirefighter.com/

“Think outside the box!”  This is one of the fire service’s favorite clichés.  The problem is that by thinking outside the box so much, we have forgotten about the box itself.  Ironically, it is what is inside the box that kills us.  The box I am referring to is the structure on fire and, more specifically, the little boxes inside of it where we have to go to put the fire out.  There are six sides to every box, and to stay safe and effective, we have to consider all of them during firefighting operations.
