Pain Remains 25 Years after Columbus Line of Duty Death

THEODORE DECKER, The Columbus Dispatch Published Wednesday, August 15, 2012

He remembers every bit of that hot, miserable summer night.

He remembers the chaos on the radios, the blinding smoke, and the hole in the floor that may as well have been bottomless.

He remembers the crushing acceptance, as bricks rained into the alley around him and the Mithoff Building started to come down, that they had failed and his friend was dead.

Twenty-five years later, and the memories are as sharp as razors.

The Real Meaning of Brotherhood

BY FRED CROSBY
From www.fireengineering.com

THE CONCEPT OF BROTHERHOOD IS DEEPLY ROOTED in the common experience of those in the American fire service; yet, from my experience, it seems that few of us remember or fully understand the implications of such a concept.
My high school English teacher taught us that the strength of the English language is that it is a living and evolving language-the meanings of words evolve within the context in which they are used. Brotherhood may just be one of those evolving words. In the larger world today, brotherhood has come to be a term used by any group sharing a goal, no matter how nefarious the purpose. A simple Google search of the Internet returns more than 10,000 “hits” on the term brotherhood.

Challenging the Traditional Meaning of Aggressive Fire Attack

By Author(s): Shannon Pieper [3]
Published Wednesday, August 1, 2012 on www.firefighternation.com

In 2009, FDNY Lt. Ray McCormack roiled the fire service with a passionate keynote address at FDIC about the “culture of safety” that was developing in the fire service—and why he didn’t like it. One of the often-quoted lines from his presentation: “Too much safety makes Johnny a poor leader and a terrible rescuer.”

Many firefighters objected to Lt. McCormack’s presentation, arguing that his comments were inappropriate for a national presentation and could too easily be taken out of context and used to justify unsafe tactics. But just as many, if not more, felt that McCormack was simply putting voice to what they’d felt for some time now—that a continuing emphasis on preventing firefighter injury and death was threatening firefighters’ ability to do their job.
